How Important Are Tags?

How Important Are Tags?

The most important question we need to address first would be the definition of “blog tags”, commonly shortened to “tags”. What exactly are tags? The easiest way to define a “tag” would be to think of it as a simple category name. People can categorize their posts, photos and videos with any tag that makes sense.

The problem with tags however is that most people are unaware of how to use them properly and simply tag anything and everything, with any type of relevant name which really defeats the purpose and actually hurts your blog in search engines.

When “tags” first appeared in the blogosphere, they were intended to help blogs gain traffic via search engines as well as to help users properly navigate a large blog. But with people adding tags almost at random, no longer is this the case for most blogs.

One thing you really want to do when tagging posts is make it incredibly relevant to the topic at hand, not only to clean your blog up but to make sure it’s doing the job its intended for when it comes to search engines.

It does need to be cleared up that tags are beneficial for blogs if they’re done right, and that’s the most important part of it all. I know it might be a lot of work but going back through your posts (maybe 3-5 a day) and properly tagging them will really help the traffic increase on your blog.

New Google PageRank System?

New Google PageRank System?

Okay, so it’s not new - this situation happened over a year ago but it recently just became public knowledge.

Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s Spam team talked about how they changed the way Google views “PageRank Sculpting”, which is the term Cutts and Google are now using.

Cutts said:

So what happens when you have a page with “ten PageRank points” and ten outgoing links, and five of those links are nofollowed? Originally, the five links without nofollow would have flowed two points of PageRank each (in essence, the nofollowed links didn’t count toward the denominator when dividing PageRank by the outdegree of the page). More than a year ago, Google changed how the PageRank flows so that the five links without nofollow would flow one point of PageRank each.

Now, what does that mean? In plain English, the usage of the nofollow attribute will still stop the page that is being linked to from receiving PageRank and anchor text value, but the PageRank that is being “saved” with the nofollow links won’t flow to the other links present in the linking page (thanks to DailyBlogTips.com for the defenition). This really changes the way used PageRank in the past and really can mess up some blogs PageRank. If you’ve noticed some oddities in PageRank the last six months or so, now we know why.

So what is the solution to fix this issue and not lose an important PageRank? According to Disqus, the best solution (though not yet proven) would be to include a JavaScript on your blog which Google is not able to handle. Another solution being used currently is to turn off your comments.

Whatever the case might be, this is pretty big news to the blogging and SEO communities.

All In One SEO Pack - Plugin

All In One SEO Pack - Plugin

When I first started blogging, I literally knew nothing about “SEO” otherwise known as Search Engine Optimization. The term just made my eyes cringe. Over time however I’ve come to not only understand SEO on a much better level, but have also learned to use to my advantage.

Search Engine Optimization has its critics but from my experiences, it works. The only problem with SEO is that it normally takes a lot of trial and error, or I should say, it has in the past.

Now thanks to the help of some experienced programmers, they’ve made SEO very user friendly with the All In One SEO Pack. This plugin (remember a plugin is a simple one click install of a powerful script which makes life easy for bloggers) allows for a quick one step install of a very in depth SEO program. Normally, you would contact an SEO firm and pay a lot of money for what this simple plugin does. I should note though that this plugin is only available for Wordpress.com or Wordpress.org blogs.

Once you install the plugin and activate it, you simply click on the “settings” tab, click “All In One SEO”, fill out the little form with the requested information, click submit and your blog will experience quite a jump in traffic. Of course you’ll want to give the plugin some time to work its magic and allow your links to be properly linked in the search engines.

With the All In One SEO plugin now installed, you can also manually set up each posting if you wish with your own SEO knowledge if you wish or you can let it do it automatically.

It’s a great plugin that I highly recommend for any blogger, new or old.

10 Important Facts Of Promotion

10 Important Facts Of Promotion

Promotion…promotion…promotion. It’s the biggest and most important factor of making your blog successful. But, like most good things - it’s not easy. DailyBlogTips breaks down 10 important facts of promotion in this article that all bloggers should check out. It’s a great read.

Almost every blogger aims to grow their blog and reach a larger audience. Unfortunately, most new bloggers don’t know much about promoting a blog when they are just getting started. The good news is you will learn pretty quickly if you are consistently involved and working at promoting your blog. Here are ten things that I have learned to be true from my experience.

1. Building Significant Search Engine Traffic Will Take Time

New blogs generally take several months, at least, before they gain enough trust from search engines to produce any type of significant flow of traffic. If you are planning to focus on search engines as your primary source of traffic, you would be well advised to also focus on some other sources of traffic, especially in the early months.

Building a blog that is search engine-friendly is critical if you want to maximize search traffic, so take care of that from the start and focus on creating great content that others will talk about and link to.

2. Not All Traffic Is Equal

No two sources of traffic are quite the same. I get a good percentage of the traffic at my blog through social media, and I can attest to the fact that social media traffic is generally less responsive and less likely to stick around than visitors from most other sources. Focusing on stats without looking at the true results can cause a bit of an illusion. Sure, visitors are great, but are they leaving after being on the blog for 30 seconds and never returning?

Search engine traffic is highly sought after because these visitors are actively looking for what you have to offer. But other types of traffic have strong points too. Visitors who are referred from another blog will generally be more responsive since they have been recommended by someone they trust. Every source of traffic has pros and cons, so try to take these things into consideration when you are promoting your blog and analyzing the results.
