To Comment Or Not To Comment

To Comment Or Not To Comment

Comments are very important, at least to me…but some would disagree. Blogsessive.com takes a stab at both sides of the argument in this great article:

Why is it that when we hear of blogging we tend to link it almost instantly to post comments? Because the conversation blogs harbor, the ingredient that makes them part of a community, what turns them into a critical part of social media, the instant feedback and interaction, all that makes blogging so wonderful is mostly powered by comments.

Yet, there are blogs that choose to have no commenting options. Is that something we define as wrong? Does that make the whole 2.0 aspect of blogs simply disappear? Well, it depends. Just as enabling comments does not guarantee a meaningful conversation with your readers (if there are any readers), not having them does not imply there’s no way to build great relationships with blog visitors.

Given these many shades of gray, I thought analyzing both options might be quite helpful for both new bloggers and those who have been an active part of the blogosphere for quite a while.

What to Do when Comments Come Your Way?

Having or not having comments is not the only decision you’ll have to make. There are other questions heading your way, such as:

  • Should you moderate comments?
  • Should you ask readers to login to comment?
  • Is a comment policy necessary?
  • Should comment links be “no follow”?

Handling Negative Comments On Your Blog Post

Handling Negative Comments On Your Blog Post

One thing that sucks about blogging is the negative comments you will receive…it’s not a matter of if, but, when. But don’t get too upset -they’re actually good for your blog. Yes, you  heard right. Chrisbrogan.com breaks down the benefit of these nasty comments.

If you are like me, you don’t write blog posts to fish for negative comments.

As a blogger I love comments because they stroke my ego - even non-flattering (or neutral) comments are good! It’s like “wow, someone besides my mom reads my blog!

But negative comments are really hard to deal with. It doesn’t help that most comments on my blog are positive and supportive of what I have to say. “Right on!” “Totally agree!” “Excellent post!” This is good for my ego, but bad to prepare me to handle anything negative.

Or even perceived negative. That would include comments that seem to be negative the first time I read them, but are not really negative.

Recently I wrote a post that offended someone (The 10 Hour Job Search - Seriously). She commented, and I felt her comment was scathing, mean and inappropriate. I took it personally and posted a rebuttal, picking apart her comment line by line. And then I spend the rest of the day feeling horrible, not because of her comment but at the way I reacted.
